Sydney 2015 (Part One)

Alan and I accidentally participated in what is apparently a national tradition in Australia on New Year's Day. And that is: Go to the Beach. We were simply thinking that a walk from Bondi Beach to Coogee Beach wouldn't depend on business being open on the holiday. A lot of them were open, so we needn't have bothered.

Well, we caught our first bus on the way to Bondi, then got off to change buses where Google says to do so. And proceeded to watch as bus after bus after bus full to capacity with beach goers drove past us. With nothing else for it, we started walking, passing bathing suit-clad folks at every bus stop. An hour later, we finally made it to the junction where Google should have recommended a bus change, and boarded to ride the final 2.5 km to Bondi Beach.

After some reading on the beach, we began the coastal walk outlined in our Lonely Planet book, passing some smaller beaches and bays like Bronte Beach, as well as other coastal landmarks like the Waverly Cemetery and the Bali bombings monument, before reaching Coogee Beach.

As a reward, we enjoyed a cold drink at the Coogee Bay Hotel, before taking the bus back to our hostel (which is a dormitory making the most of the summer holidays).

On Friday, we joined the crowds at the Sydney Aquarium, seeing some of the usual favorites, as well as stingrays, sharks, and dugongs.

That afternoon, we boarded a ferry at Darling Harbour for Sydney Olympic Park, sight of the 2000 Olympics. I am sure the holiday had something to do with it, but the Park had the feel of a ghost town. It looks like the Aquatic Center gets a good deal of use, and the stadiums are suitable for large soccer/football tournaments like the upcoming Asia Cup. Be that as it may, we looked, we saw, and we left.
